Robert Hooke: Tercentennial Studies
by Michael Hunter

Robert Hooke (1635-1703) was a genius whose wide-ranging achievements are at last receiving the recognition that they deserve. Long overshadowed by such eminent contemporaries as Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Christopher Wren, Hooke's own seminal contributions to science, architecture and technology are now being acclaimed in their own right. Curator of Experiments to the Royal Society when it was chartered in 1662 and author of the famous Micrographia (1665), Hooke also showed unparalleled ingenuity in designing machines and instruments, and played a crucial role as Surveyor to the City of London after the Great Fire. This volume represents a benchmark in the study of Hooke, bringing together a comprehensive set of studies of different aspects of his life, thought and artistry. Its sections deal with Hooke's life and reputation; his contributions to celestial mechanics and astronomy, and to speculative natural philosophy; the instruments that he designed; and his work in architecture and construction. The introduction places the studies in the context of our current understanding of Hooke and his milieu, while the book also contains a comprehensive bibliography. In all, it will be an invaluable resource for all those interested in a figure whose complexity and importance are becoming clear after centuries of neglect.

(1962)In 1665 Hooke published Micrographia, a book describing observations made with microscopes and telescopes, as well as some original work in biologyThe book that is published today is compiled from papers that were presented at the Robert Hooke Conference at the Royal Society in 2003, 300 years after his deathFor example, Arthur Berry said that Hooke "claimed credit for most of the scientific discoveries of the time."[17] Sullivan wrote that Hooke was "positively unscrupulous" and possessing an "uneasy apprehensive vanity" in dealings with Newton.[18] Manuel used the phrase "cantankerous, envious, vengeful" in his description.[19] More described Hooke having both a "cynical temperament" and a "caustic tongue."[20] Andrade was more sympathetic, but still used the adjectives "difficult", "suspicious", and "irritable" in describing Hooke.[21]International Transactions, 1st quarter 2017 and Annual Update13 days agoCapitalist ExploitsCapitalist ExploitsWhat Happens When Things Cant Get Any Worse?14 days agoWhile My Qatar Gently Weeps24 days agoAn Absurd Unintended Consequence Of Abnormally Low RatesApril 22, 2017How Heavy Is This?April 18, 2017Trump Wall How Exactly?March 12, 2017An Entrepreneur Talks IranMarch 7, 2017Things Youll Never BelieveFebruary 6, 2017Marc ChandlerMarc ChandlerEmerging Markets: Preview of the Week Ahead14 hours agoOfficial Coordination or Is the Market Getting Ahead of Itself?19 hours agoSpeculators Scramble to Cover Short Canadian Dollar and Mexican Peso Futures2 days agoNormalization Ideas Weigh on Greenback2 days agoTwo Policy Updates2 days agoEmerging Markets: What has Changed3 days agoGreenback Stabilizes3 days agoTyler DurdenTyler DurdenChina Sends Warships, Fighter Jets To Intercept US Destroyer In South China Sea11 hours agoDelaware Assembly Passes Historic Law Legalizing Blockchain-Based Stock Trades11 hours agoAbe Plunges Into Crisis After LDP Suffers Historic Defeat In Tokyo Elections, USDJPY Slides12 hours agoNew Report Warns Nuclear War Is Inevitable Unless Cooler Heads Prevail12 hours agoDid Martin Shkrelis FBI Arrest Save Him From A Hit Ordered By The Wu-Tang Clan?12 hours agoGetting Taxpayer-Funded Free Stuff Is Not Religious Liberty13 hours agoDeutsche: The Market Broke In 2012, This Is What Everyone Is Talking About13 hours agoEconMattersEconMattersNo The Oil Market Is Not Fixed!
